Make Sure to Volunteer Your Volunteer Work on Your Resume

Make Sure to Volunteer Your Volunteer Work on Your ResumeMake Sure to Volunteer Your Volunteer Work on Your Resume4Good news for people who perform volunteer work. In addition to the satisfaction that comes from helping others, you may be boosting your ability to be hired- if you make sure to include the information on your resume and cover letter. The 2016 Deloitte Volunteer Impact Survey polled 2,506 professionals in 13 major metropolitan areas across the United States who are currently employed and have the ability to either directly influence hiring or indirectly influence the person making the hiring decision.Among the key findings82 percent of respondents said they are more likely to choose a candidate with volunteering experience.85 percent are willing to overlook other resume flaws when a candidate includes volunteer work on a resume.80 percent of survey respondents agree that active volunteers move into leadership roles more easily.Surprisingly, though, respondents reported t hat they see volunteer experience listed on only 30 percent of the resumes they receive. Why arent candidates including this important information? Some may omit volunteer work for the sake of space, choosing instead to focus on educational attainment and industry-related employment. Others mistakenly believe that employers wont be interested.Whether or bedrngnis you are paid, volunteer experience often uses the very same skills essential to a great hire, says executive career coach Duncan Mathison, co-author of Unlock the Hidden Job Market 6 Steps to a Successful Job Search When Times Are Tough. In fact, when developing leaders, employers will often suggest that a high potential employee take on a role leading a group of volunteers. The reasoning is if you can learn how to organize, inspire, and hold accountable volunteers to achieve objectives (who could quit any time if they thought you are a bozo), you would do even better when given the mantel of a paid manager of paid employees .So how can job seekers present their volunteer service in ways that will contribute to their candidacy? Mathison believes the key is to identify your accomplishments in the volunteer role and what knowledge and skills allowed you to achieve them. Then, go to work showing the hiring manager how these transferable skills will make you a more valuable, dedicated, and productive employee. On your resume treat a volunteer position the same way you would treat a regular position, Mathison says. Like any position, it should have the organization name, a brief description of what it does, the scope, position titles and dates, and your accomplishments. Try to use the words that your intended hiring manager would use. The entries can be put in a separate section calledOther Relevant Experience as opposed to Volunteer Experience. For recent graduates seeking to highlight every skill they have, just keep it in a broader category of Experience or Positions Held- Work/Intern/Volunteer.Then, be re ady to volunteer more information- when youre invited for an interviewStart your search for a remote job.Readers, have you omitted volunteer work from you resume? 5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career Website

5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career Website5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career WebsiteIf youre looking for a job, a great resume is a must. But did you know that a personal career website can increase your chances of being hired? We live in an online world. Even if a classic offline resume is here to stay, most of the hiring managers today take your online presence into account before they call you up for an interview. A personal career website is a great way to show yourself in the best light online. You say you dont know how to code? No problem There are so many website builders and hosted CMS (content management system) sites available where you can create your own web easily even if youre notlage a coder. fruchtwein of them offer a range of pre-designed templates that you simply just fill in with your text, pictures or links and voil your website is done. If you think you dont have enough content to create a complex website with plenty of subpages, dont w orry about that. You can create a great website with only one landing page. Check out ,WordPress, Weebly, Wix, or Squarespace. Why should you have a personal career website? You might think you dont need a personal website because you either dont have that much experience or enough assets to add to your portfolio. Dont worry about that, anybody can have a website. If you dont have extensive experience, your website can serve as a contact page containing little info about yourself with links to your email or social media. You can also create your online resume where you list all your previous work experiences and skills or you build a portfolio page where you showcase all your works. On the contrary, if you have a lot to say, you can combine all of these and create a complex website about the professional (and a bit of personal) you. You can evenlink it to your blog or your photography portfolio page.A big advantage of a personal web is that you can keep your resume brief. If you put a link to your website, be sure the hiring manager is going to check it and hence you dont have to put that many details on your resume. Also, unlike a resume, your personal website is a dynamic place that you can constantly update for new skills or projects.Do you still need more reasons to create a personal career website? Here you go1. People can easily reach youThe disadvantage of a resume is that you send it out privately and usually only a couple of people from the company youre applying for will see it. The thing with a personal website, however, is that it is online and therefore, for everyone in the vast world of internet to see.You might not want to disclose personal information about yourself online. But you dont have to worry. You usually dont really put very personal stuff someone might abuse up there. To reveal information about your professional life is not that much of a threat. On the contrary it might help you because you never know who sees your profile and contact s you. It goes without saying always put your contact information on as well.2. It helps you stand outEven though its quite easy to create a personal website, still many people dont make the effort. So if youput a link to your website on your resume youll appear much more professional. Of course, make sure your website is nicely designed and includes quality content. Because to have a website isnt everything. You have to have a good website. If you have a website, you appear like a much more attractive candidate than someone who doesnt.3.More space to showcase yourselfIt showcases all your work in one place. In order for your resume to be easily legible, you cant really squeeze that much info into a resume. Especially when youre after a creative kind of job, a personal website is a must-have. You simply cannot show enough of your abilities through a resume, even if you list down your skills. For any other kind of jobs, the same applies. A resume is just a brief overview of your pro fessional work, but a personal career website can show a lot more from your work to the hiring manager.4. You control your online presenceThis is quite an important thing. Theres been so much talk already about the hiring managers googling the candidates and how they go over their social media sites. If you have a personal website, theyll find all the relevant info about you on it and then dont need to take your Facebook or Twitter profile that much into account. Of course, you shouldnt give your kompetenzprofil employer a reason to think badly of you based on how you present yourself on social networks. Present yourself in a better way on your personal web and be sure theyll appreciate it.5.You improve your skillsLike we already said, if you have your own personal website, youll come across more professional. Building of a personal web is yet another experience you get in order to get your dream job. B creating your webiste. you gain plenty of useful skills every hiring manager wil l surely appreciate. You enhance your skills in coding, web design, graphic design, copywriting, etc. And even if you dont build your webiste from scratch, but rather use one of the pre-designed templates in one of the hosting platforms, its still a creative work that helps you improve.Would you like to have a personal website but think creating one takes too much time and effort? In , you can create your personal website straight from your resume with one click of a button.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

The 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a Sale

The 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a SaleThe 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a SaleOne of the hardest lessons for new salespeople to learn is the importance of closing every sale. The close doesnt have to be as difficult as it landseems. If you did a good job of presenting the product and responded to the prospects objections, the close follows naturally. However, if things didnt go quite so smoothly, you may need to give the prospect a bit of a nudge to successfully close the sale. Here are a few strategies which may help when the simple approach fails. The Assumptive Close The assumptive close is the most generic and the one to use if you havent been able to fit the prospect to a more customized close. After making the presentation and answering the prospects questions, ask a question that assumes your prospect is about to buy the product. Here are a few examples? Would you prefer red or blue? Our standard delivery can have this to you by Tuesday, or will you need our rush delivery vorkaufsrecht? Will ten units do for a start?I can get you a 10% discount if you pay for a year in advance, would that work for you? Will you be having fries or onion rings with your meal? OK, you probably wont use that last one very often. It shouldnt be too difficult to come up with a handful of similar assumptive questions that fit your product(s) or service(s). The Time-Limit Close This is a good one to use if your prospect utters the fatal phrase Id like to think it over first. Pause for a beat, then nod thoughtfully and say something like this I can certainly understand your wanting to think about this, but I want to let you know now that the model youd like is a popular one and were usually understocked. Id hate for you to be stuck with a model thats not as good a fit just because this ones not available tomorrow Or mention a discount that will expire in two days or a promotion such as a gift with purchase thats about to end. Of course, this only works if such a limitation exists never lie to a prospect You may be able to work with your sales manager to come up with limited-time offers to use if you dont have company-wide ones. The Custom Close If youve qualified the customer well, youve probably gathered a lot of information about their preferences (color, size, features, quality level, the amount theyre ready to spend, etc.). When youre ready to close, look at your notes about the prospects needs and say something like this So, you need an LCD TV thats big enough for everyone in the living room to see clearly, that costs not more than $500, and youd prefer it in silver. Are there any other features youd like? Wait for the prospect to answer, then assuming they say no smile and say... Luckily our XCL 5560 is a perfect fit for you It has all those features plus it comes with our advanced sound system, and its yours for just $399. All I need is your signature and Ill have it delivered right to your home by the end of the week. Still smiling, hand over the contract and point out the signature line. Since youve already accounted for everything the prospect says they want in a TV, its unlikely theyll back out now. If the prospect does hesitate at this point, he likely has some unresolved objections. Youll need to find out what they are and help the prospect overcome them in order to close the sale.

Advice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobs

Advice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobsAdvice about life after layoffs, from people who have lost their jobsBeing laid off is one of the most emotionally fraught experiences you can go through in your career. Its something many of us inevitably go through, but it can be hard to discuss with potential employers, let alone your worried friends and family.Thats why we asked to hear your layoff stories to commiserate over terrible workplace exits and to share wisdom from those of you who have come out of forced unemployment to live to tell the tale. Some of you had best-case scenarios and some of you enduredhumiliatingly public layoffs thatstill haunt you. All of you were honest when asked by future employers by what had happened. Heres what Ladders readers said.See if you can get a heads up without causing panicThose of you with thoughtful managers usually got a heads-up about a potential layoff. Patrick from New York said he knew that his days were numbered when my manager came to me in March and told me it would be good for me to keep my resume up to date, that changes were coming and would be widespread.Later the nextmonth, his managers prediction came true. The preparation he had from his manager helped him find a new job without a gemeinsame agrarpolitik in unemployment.I think of this as sort of a best-case scenario for layoffs. I had a months unofficial warning and then a months official warning and then two months severance on top of that. I found a job just as the severance welches running out, so I guess I needed everything I got.Mysterious vague meetings are usually a warning signWord to the wise if your manager makes a meeting to touch base, you may need to pack up your stuff, as Mike from Arizonadid. My manager set a meeting titled Touch Base on my calendar a couple days before. (This shouldve been my first indication of what was coming. Id done the same thing when I had to let people go.), he wrote. The day I was let go, I walked into his office and an HR part was there - someone Id worked closely over the past couple of years. I had been through it on the other side of the desk, so after he told me I was being let go. I shook his hand, thanked him for everything, and went back to my office for a few minutes. Theres no point in prolonging the meeting or asking questions. HR is there to deflect it all anyway. I took the high road.Leave a good impressionEmotions are running high during the layoff, so it can be tempting to act out or be angry, but it pays off in the long run toleave a good impression onyour former employer. In any case, theres leidhing productive to be gained by lashing out once youre laid off, the decision has already been made and it wont be reversed. As Mike wrote, A few days later, I ran into one of my closest friends at work and she talked to my former manager afterward. She told him I took the news like a pro. He also said the way I handled it made him feel even worse - which, I m ust admit, felt good to hear The security team, as usual, was there to make koranvers I wasnt going to cause trouble. I shook their hands on the way out. They were so nice and sympathetic.Be prepared for a lot of emotionsNot every company is good at laying people off. Having a private decision made public also makes the layoff sting more.Teri, who worked at a company for more than three years, said the way her news directorcalled her into a Human Resources office in front of everyone left her embarrassed, sad, angry.Others also had less than pleasant HR experiences that still leave lasting impressions.HR was absurdly concerned about getting me out the door immediately, Anne, who had been at hercompany for 20 years, remembers clearly about her layoff. They really didnt want me to go back to my office to get my things. I insisted on it anyway. I was angry about being let go and I was angry that, after working there for 20 years, they were acting like I couldnt be trusted. Also, the se verance was stingy- 12 weeks for a 20-year tenure. An in-person layoff feels more personal than a layoff via phone or email. For some of you, it felt like getting a phone call meant that your hard work for the company never mattered. As Stan from New Jersey, wrote, his layoff by phone left him feeling like a piece of trash that was discarded. In one surreal experience, Drew from New York said that after he learned about his layoff, his boss posted my job description immediately and began interviewing my potential replacement while I was still in the office. He also tried to throw me a going away party (I refused) and gave me a card and a bottle of booze on my last day.Our readers best advice on how to handle a layoffAlways be nice to people. You never know whos going to end up where and when youll need somebody to vouch for you. - Ross, New York, New YorkDont panic. Take a day to figure out your next steps, and let your emotions subside before sending any rash emails. Also to find a ne w job, strike when the iron is hot and people are sympathetic to your plight. - Emily, New York, New YorkNegotiate. Dont feel guilty or embarrassed. And go to the gym every day instead of sleeping late and feeling sorry for yourself.- Drew, New York, New YorkPTO turns out not to be a very good deal if you never have the opportunity to use it.- Tad, Oakland, CaliforniaIf it does happen to you unexpectedly, take it as an opportunity to do something better. I took a chance with a payout and eventually got a job with a much higher salary. - Anora, New York, New YorkKnow that work doesnt define you, and if it does, there are bigger issues to deal with. Youll find a job again. - Josh, New York, New YorkThink about what you really want to do, what skills you have, where you might be happiest. Try not to panic. There are always ways to make moneyLiving through it is freeing- you know that you can survive anything. - Susanna, Brooklyn, New YorkIf you feel personally targeted, talk to your un ion, a lawyer right away. Otherwise keep your head up. They let you go, and you need to let them go.- Teri, city not disclosedNo matter how dumb an idea it was for your employer to let you go, you have to get over that pain and anger you feel. It took me over a month, but once I mentally moved on, I was able to start searching productively for opportunities I was excited about. You have to be able to talk about yourself and your career without this traumatic event dominating every detail. - Chris, Kansas City, MissouriAlways keep a rainy day fund to relieve the stress of extended unemployment. I manage my finances to plan for a worst-case scenario and I was financially prepared for this event.- Anonymous, San Clemente, CaliforniaIf at all possible, take the high road and dont say something that will make you feel good for 30 seconds only to regret it forever. You never know whose path you might again crossIf you get severance and can afford to do so, give yourself time to exhale and decompress. You need to get your mind cleared before you can start a job search.- Mike, Phoenix, ArizonaAct as if anything your company provides you computer, email, wolke account, etc., could be taken away fromyou at the end of any meeting you go into, because thats how they do. - Patrick, New York, New York1. Dont stay at work right after it happens, lest you say something you may not mean. If you have work to do before your end date, thats fine, but take a walk, get a coffee, call a friend or a loved one, and let the shock of it pass before you see another colleague. Youll have a lot of sympathy from coworkers and friends in this situation, and its best to maintain that reservoir. Youll need it.2. Call everyone. You never know who has a good contact, who has admired your work from afar, etc. Theres absolutely no shame in what youre going through, so post (kindly) about your situation, let people know youre looking, and work your network with your head up. In all likelihood this decision has nothing to do with you, your skill or your performance, so carry that pride with you. - Matt, New York, New York

Keep calm and self improve Try single-unit study in 2015

Keep calm and self improve Try single-unit study in 2015 Keep Calm And Improve Yourself How Short Courses Can Help You SucceedPosted January 19, 2015, by Marni WilliamsThe new year has clocked over and everyone is talking about what they are looking forward to new jobs, new cities, home improvements, babies, putting their selfie sticks to good use.And if it seems as if everyone around you is on that self-improvement conveyor-belt towards livin the dream, then youd be right. Paris-based global communications group Havas has been trend-spotting for more than a decade and has just listed self-everything as their number one bertrend for 2015Creating a positive self-image is now recognised as a vital task for everyone, boosted by good measures of self-confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, self-respect and self-regard. Getting those right sets off a self-reinforcing process, especially for those energetic self-starters.OK, its possible all that self- talk may have made even your own inward-focused eyeballs flick outwards in disgust, but, as the report suggests, all this introspection and individual action-taking seems to be a response to something bigger. Says HavasMaybe this is all an unhealthy sign of an increasingly fragmented and atomised society. But maybe its more about people responding to a world that has gotten too big and too unmanageable.Unmanageable? Surely not I for one am managing just fine with the 41,000 new Facebook posts per second and 278,000 tweets every minute. If were now relying only on ourselves to improve our own lives then its probably no surprise that self-directed learning was also in Havass much-awaited Whats-Now report. We direct our own learning online every day. Whether its finding the right YouTube clip for your IKEA flat pack assembly or completing an online degree, were more capable than ever of learning lifes lessons from our living rooms. Yet for all that convenience, finding a career path can seem more difficult than ev er. Maybe this is because were also living in a time when the terms analysis paralysis, information overload and decision fatigue seem increasingly relevant to our daily lives. So in this world of endless choices and industry shifts, how do we know that the paths were choosing are the right ones? The good news is that along with this barrage of choice flows a bit more flexibility we dont have to know exactly where were going from the start in order to improve ourselves. In fact, a bit of indecision can be a good thing, as long as its not stopping you from acting. Why? Because you might just try your hand at a few different careers before finding one that really calls your name. And this is easier than ever with universities offering study by-the-unit (thats by-the-subject for those of us who have been out of the study game for a while). Its an approach Open Universities Australia has pioneered with great success. In fact, 2012 saw a 17 per cent increase in unit enrolments alone, and they have found that offering subject tasters sets students on a path to greater realisation of their goals. So is single-unit study right for you? Its 2015, guys only you know the answer to that. But in our self-interested year of self-discovery, this could just be the self-directed study revolution weve been waiting for. Former ASME Congressional Fellow Bhushan Encourages Engineers to Engage in the Policy-Making Process

Former ASME Congressional Fellow Bhushan Encourages Engineers to Engage in the Policy-Making Process Former ASME Congressional Fellow Bhushan Encourages Engineers to Engage in the Policy-Making Process Former ASME Congressional Fellow Bhushan Encourages Engineers to Engage in the Policy-Making ProcessDuring his term as an ASME Congressional Fellow, Bharat Bhushan, PhD, PE, served on the Republican staff of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology (SST) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Applications are being accepted through the end of January for the ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program, which offers selected ASME members the opportunity to spend a year in Washington, D.C., providing technical advice to policymakers in Congress and other federal agencies. Bharat Bhushan, PhD, PE, who completed his yearlong Fellowship last August, describes his term on Capitol Hill as extremely rewarding and encourages other ASME members to contribute their much-needed knowledg e and experience through the Federal Fellows program. Dr. Bhushan, who served on the Republican staff of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology (SST) in the U.S. House of Representatives, was one of two ASME members who served as 2013-2014 ASME Federal Government Fellows. The other ASME Congressional Fellow for that term, Mahantesh Hiremath, PhD, served on the staff of the SSTs Energy and Environment Subcommittee in analyzing energy and environmental issues. (Dr. Hiremath discussed his Fellowship in a recent ASME News article, which can be read here.) Bharat Bhushan (left), with the Honorable John Boehner (R-OH), the current Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Bhushan, an Ohio Eminent Scholar and Howard D. Winbigler Professor and director of the Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- and Nanotechnology and Biomimetics at the Ohio State University, spent his year on Capitol Hill preparing science legislation and arranging hearings for the SSTs Subcommitt ee on Research and Technology. The subcommittee is responsible for the reauthorization and management of programs related to the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Office of Science and Technology Policy, as well as the 21st Century Nanotoechnology RD Act, STEM and Technology Transfer. Bhushans duties as a Congressional Fellow included selecting witnesses and preparing questions for subcommittee hearings, preparing op-ed pieces, drafting memos, preparing research overviews regarding various technologies, and attending regional meetings of the National Academies and numerous hearings and briefings in the nations capital and in other locations. During his year as an ASME Congressional Fellow, Bhushan was struck by the genuine need for technical engineering and scientific guidance on Capitol Hill, where fewer than five percent of the members of Congress charged with making decisions on bills involving technical components are a ctually engineers or scientists. According to the report Bhushan submitted at the end of his Fellowship, only 12 House and Senate members in the 113th Congress had engineering degrees, while a mere five to 10 percent of the Congressional staff who prepare the legislation typically possess physical science or engineering degrees. This is a scenario Bhushan would like to help change. Dr. Bhushan is greeted by the Honorable Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. I would like to see the engineers and scientists we train also have some hintergrund in science public policy, so that when they graduate, they will choose to work in Washington as a regular staff member, Bhushan said. The vast majority of Congressional staff who write legislation - and there are 14,000 of them on the Hill - have a degree in public policy or political science, but only a few have a background in engineering and science. So, what Im hoping is that people re ally do become professional staff members and more of them run for elected offices. Bhushan and Ohio State are doing their part to prepare their engineering students for the public policy arena. Last month, the university approved a new minor program in engineering and public policy. Bhushan is currently teaching a joint course in science policy at the universitys John Glenn School of Public Affairs, where he is in the process of being named an affiliated faculty member. Meanwhile, Bhushan is actively seeking another fellowship opportunity - this time with the executive branch government - with the full untersttzung of the universitys College of Engineering. My university is very interested that I remain engaged, he explained. They see it as very beneficial to them to have this Washington connection. They also want to bring this recognition of public policy to engineers. My job is to be champion for science policy, Bhushan continued. Id like to see more engineers get interes ted in it and participate in policy making rather than leaving it to people who have no background and appreciation for engineering, science and technology. Answers to 5 Common Cover Letter Questions

Answers to 5 Common Cover Letter Questions Answers to 5 Common Cover Letter Questions 2Have questions about creating an awesome deckblatt letter that increases your gunst der stundes of landing an interview? Weve got answers Cover letters are often just as important as resumes, and in some cases, more important.Candidates should take advantage of their opportunity to build upon the accomplishments noted on their resume and provide much-needed background. So, here are answers to five common titelseite letter questions that job applicants often need to know.5 Common Cover Letter Questions1. Is a titelblatt letter necessary?Perhaps the most common of cover letter questions, the answer here is, for the most part, yes. Occasionally, a posting will state not to include one, and candidates should honor the prospective employers request. Also, if a job opportunity comes through a headhunter or recruiter who has seen your qualifications, the contacting party may jump directly to setting up an interview without needing a cover letter.Beyond these situations, submitting a cover letter is generally either expected or in your best interest. Think of it as an additional chance to sell yourself and provide context to the key points that are on your resume.2. How long should a cover letter be?Attention spans are getting shorter every day, so cover letters should be shorter than they were in the past. The exact length thats right for you depends on your situation, but 200 words or less works well for most candidates nowadays, says Certified Professional Resume Writer Kelly Donovan, principal at Kelly Donovan Associates.Spilling way beyond that amount? Watch that you arent using the space to compensate for an underdeveloped resume.Dont use the cover letter as a place for important details youre too lazy to add to the resume, Donovan notes. Some people think they can use the same resume to apply for lots of different jobs without making any changes and just include a cover letter targeted to each. The problem is that if HR screeners or hiring managers read the resume first and dont see you as sufficiently relevant and qualified, theyre probably not going to bother reading the letter3. What should be in a cover letter?Vicky Oliver, author of 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions, emphasizes the importance of including keywords. For example, if the ad states that the company is looking for a brand storyteller, then you should include those exact words in your letter- not synonyms. Many companies today are using a type of artificial intelligence software that scans job applications for the key words, so dont be coy.Donovan adds that employers like to see genuine interest in their specific company.A lot of candidates submit applications for jobs they dont feel strongly about just to see what happens. Use your cover letter to prove that you actually care about the job and company. Incorporate information that shows youve done your homework. For example, maybe you use a product the company makes you can talk about that to demonstrate your passion. Or maybe the company is planning to expand into the healthcare vertical, and you have a lot of experience in that vertical and would enjoy driving the expansion.4. What should a job candidate not include in a cover letter? While you can incorporate significant highlights, avoid simply rehashing your resume. And while the cover letter can be a good place to briefly explain things such as changing careers or transitioning back into the workforce, refrain from presenting your life story or coming off as desperate.5. How do I make my cover letter stand out?Consider a well-written, error-free letter addressed to a specific person as the minimum requirement. Then, look for opportunities to take your cover letter to the next level. The best way to make your cover letter stand out is to say you have been recommended by a particular person who works there- if true. A strong track record in the field or a good story, with you as the hero or heroine of your journey in the field, is also a good bet, Oliver says.Close by thanking the person for their consideration and including your contact information (for the employers convenience and in case your letter and resume get separated). Take one last look at your letter. When Its OK to Break the Rules at Work - The Muse

When Its OK to Break the Rules at Work - The Muse When Its OK to Break the Rules at Work I recently read a newsletter by Raghav Haran, job search strategist and B2B content marketer, on how he picked up a new language in eight weeks and bypassed his college’s requirement that you need two years of language classes to graduate. In his story, he wrote something that really stuck with me: [Our] whole lives we’re told to ‘never take shortcuts’ and ‘be patient.’ If I took the advice most people told me, I would’ve wasted two full years of my life taking these extra courses, and tens of thousands of dollars in tuition money…Down the road, I started seeing similar things happen in other areas of life- some people hack their way to fast promotions in their career, while others ‘work their way up.’ Some people make career leaps and land jobs they were unqualified for on paper, while others wait to get the ‘right experience’…I learned that those who are afraid to ‘break the rules’ a little bit and test unconventional strategies end up wasting way more time (and sometimes waste more money) trying to find success. It’s true, right? We see people all the time breaking the rules at work and not suffering consequences, but rather being rewarded for their daring nature. And, some rules need to be broken to leave room for more exciting opportunities. Well, not all of us have the luxury of going rogue. Maybe our jobs require us to consistently follow a schedule or strategy, or our boss is overbearingly set in his ways. So, how can you take some risks in a role that limits your creativity and innovation? Here are some situations where it’s OK to set your own agenda (within reason, I’m not your boss after all): 1. When You’re Not Given Strict Guidelines When your boss doesn’t give you specific instructions on an assignment, or is only interested in the end result- a revenue target, a users goal, a set number of new clients- they probably care little about how you get there, just as long as you do. That being said, there are some rules you definitely have to follow. Maybe there’s a script for what you can and can’t say to prospects, or a pool of people only you’re allowed to reach out to. But if you keep these in mind, the rest can be up to you to innovate a bit. 2. When You’re Given the Go-Ahead to Run With a Project On the flip side, if your boss gives you explicit permission to run with a project as you wish, that’s not only your green light to get creative, but also an indication that they want to see you- if not, require you to- take ownership of your work. This means you should be breaking rules when you see more potential for growth, both for you and for the company. 3. When There’s Clearly a Better Opportunity Along with this, if you see your team losing out on a better opportunity because they’re stuck in their ways, this could be your chance to prove breaking the rules a bit is beneficial for everyone. Note: This scenario applies to smaller, less significant things- say, switching up your meeting routine or skipping a deadline to work on something more important. I’d take a guess that you don’t have the authority to make huge changes to your department or company’s strategy without asking for permission or getting all your information straight first (but more on that later). 4. When the Old Rules Are Obsolete Your company may shift its focus constantly- especially if it’s young, smaller, or part of an ever-changing industry. This means that guidelines that were important a month ago may not apply now. And when they become obsolete, this opens up doors for you to explore new strategies, perspectives, and projects. Of course, before you do anything out of the ordinary, understand why your company decided to change course and what the new rules are so you’re not overlapping with current processes or chasing after an irrelevant dream. 5. When You Ask for Permission Finally- and this applies to all of the situations above- when you ask for something, sometimes you get it (crazy, I know!). If you can make a case to your manager that certain rules need to be broken- it’ll help productivity, it’ll help you better reach your goals, it’ll make it easier to collaborate with other teams- you just might sway them to change their ways, and, even better, get them to help you out. And, by getting their permission first, you’re saving face if it doesn’t work out, and avoiding the fallout of going behind their back. Of course, even in these situations it’s possible taking the leap will result in a botched project or worse, upset your boss. It’s only normal that the more risk you take, the higher your chances of failure. (And if you do fail, read this to overcome a huge mistake.) But on the flip side, when things work out for the better- which, when you follow your gut, they usually do- you’ll not only be proud you took the leap, but might just convince your boss to give you more flexibility and freedom in your work.

How to manage a team thats getting nowhere

How to manage a team that’s getting nowhere How to manage a team that’s getting nowhere It’s hard to work in a department that isn’t doing well, but being in charge of one is a whole different story. Here’s how to manage a team that isn’t seeing the best results in the office.Make sure all employees know what’s expected of themArt Petty, a leadership and management author, software executive and adjunct professor at DePaul University, writes in The Balance about what he calls “the bottom-line” when managing a team that isn’t doing well.“Ideally, you should take the time to establish values, clarify roles and define expected behaviors at the beginning of the teaming process. However, if those steps were skipped and your team is not performing acceptably, it is incumbent upon you as the leader or manager to call a timeout and tackle these building blocks of high performance,” he writes.Show team members what’s in it for them â€" besides the cashAmy Gallo, an author, speaker and contributing editor at Harvard Business Review, writes on the site that y ou should “provide reasonable incentives” when you’re “managing people on a sinking ship.” She features commentary from Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School and author of “Strategies for Learning from Failure.Ӊ€œFind ways to reward good work. After all, if the company is failing and employees are going to collect a paycheck anyway, why wouldn’t they spend their last three months on Facebook? ‘It’s the leader’s job to answer the question: What’s in it for me?’ says [Amy] Edmondson. Make clear what they will get if they do their best in this trying time,” Gallo writes in the publication. “Will they learn a skill that will help them find their next job? Will the acquiring company be keeping some staff? How will the experience help them grow professionally? ‘If you can’t find a way to truthfully explain why they should help you get the job done, you’re out of luck,’ says Edmondson.”Don’t jump to negative conclusions too soonGiv e them a fair shot to prove you wrong.Alison Green, author of the Ask a Manager blog, writes on QuickBase about what to do when you assume a new management job running “a struggling team.” After writing about how you shouldn’t restrict yourself to what you think this team can bring to the table (and how you should aim higher), she offers another tip.“Don’t judge too quickly. It’s easy to assume that people who haven’t been performing will continue under-performing â€" and that could very well turn out to be the case. But give people some time to understand your expectations, and some of them may surprise you,” Green writes. “It’s possible that they weren’t given clear expectations in the past, or that the previous manager just had a completely different vision than you did, but that some people could actually thrive with the change you’re bringing. So don’t write people off until you see how they respond to clear expectations from you.”

Insurance Sales Agent Career Path

Insurance Sales Agent Career Path Insurance Sales Agent Career Path Among the career paths in insurance, insurance agents (also called insurance sales agents) sell one or more lines of insurance products and policies. Additionally, some insurance agents may act as financial planners and may be licensed to sell a range of investment products similar to financial advisors. Agents who are employees of a given insurance company are sometimes referred to as captive agents. Independent agents who sell the products of multiple insurance companies are  often called insurance brokers. Find Job Openings Use the job search tool  on Indeed.com to find current job openings in the field. Education A Bachelors Degree is expected. Coursework in finance, accounting and/or economics is helpful, though not required. Strong quantitative and analytic skills are vital. An MBA can give you a leg up in the hiring process, depending on the firm. Certification Licensing is complicated. Each state has its licensing requirements, which vary by the types of insurance that the insurance sales agent will handle. The industry has been pressing for uniform national licensing standards, to simplify the certification process. Insurance agents who also handle securities products will require FINRA certification, passing either the Series 6 or Series 7 exam. Those who act as financial planners may need the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. Duties and Responsibilities Insurance agents advise clients about using insurance products to protect against risk. The job has a large amount of inherent financial planning work, even if the agent does not explicitly engage in a financial planning sideline. Thus, while success is highly dependent on sales ability, strong analytic skills are also vital. Typical Schedule The time commitment is variable, depending on the specific insurance agent position and the individuals desire to excel. 40-60 hours per week is a typical range. As in other sales fields, those starting out tend to need a larger investment of time to launch their practices. Whats to Like Insurance agents often have a high degree of professional autonomy. Those paid largely by commission enjoy a close correlation between performance and reward, with significant earnings potential. The job offers a chance to make a clear, positive impact on your clients lives. Whats Not to Like Insurance agents must balance possible conflicts of interest, since compensation is based on sales, without respect to how appropriate the products sold are to the clientâۉ„¢s situation. Insurance companies are held not in generally high esteem, so there can be hurdles of distrust to overcome, which can come to a head in disputes over paying out claims. Salary Range Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual compensation was $48,150 as of May 2012, with 90% earning between $26,120 and $116,940. Compensation schemes vary by employer, but a  commission-based pay is typical. According to a study by life insurance industry research firm Limra (as reported in the 3/19/10 Wall Street Journal  article A Hot Job for Hard Times: The Life-Insurance Agent); a life insurance agent typically must expect to spend at least 5 years before they have a good chance of earning over $100,000 per year. The same report gives this distribution of annual earnings for agents affiliated with a single company who are in their second year: Under $15,000: 28%$15,000 to $34,999: 42%$35,000 to $49,999: 13%$50,000 to $74,999: 9%$75,000 to $99,999: 4%$100,000 to $124,999: 2%$125,000 and up: 2% Health Insurance Sales Agent Compensation Health insurance companies are shifting compensation for independent agents from a commission model (in which 4-6% of premiums, and possibly as much as 30% in the first year, is the norm) to a flat fee per policyholder (where $15 per person is typical). This shift is being hastened by the 2010 federal health care bill, which mandates that health insurance companies reduce their ratios of administrative costs (including sales commissions) and profit to premium revenue. The mandated ratios are 20% or less for individual and small group plans, and 15% or less for large group plans. In response, industry observers are predicting that independent agents will start charging clients directly for advice in selecting among plans and insurers. Mapping the best places for Millennials to make a living

Mapping the best places for Millennials to make a living Mapping the best places for Millennials to make a living Earning an above-average wage early in a career is a critical predictor of long-term success. Raises and promotions compound over the course of several decades. This means that if young people start out earning relatively little compared to their peers, they tend to make less over their lifetimes. Our new map highlights the parts of the country where Millennials are earning the most (and least) on an adjusted basis. We pulled our numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, which tracked the median amount each age cohort made in 2016, the latest year in which comprehensive data was available. The Census Bureau defines “Millennials” as people born between 1982 and 2000. Another factor that influenced the data is the cost of living differences across the country. Knowing those differences, it’s clearly not surprising that people in Massachusetts earn more than those in Alabama. To account for that, we adjusted the figures to reflect the true cost of living in each region according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. This creates a level playing field to compare income levels in different states. Our next step was to simply create a heat map of the country, showing which states have the highest (purple) and the lowest (light blue) median wages for Millennials. Here are the 10 states (plus Washington, DC) where Millennials earn the most money:1. Massachusetts: $80,3072. Minnesota: $77,0903. North Dakota: $76,8364. Washington, DC: $75,2205. Maryland: $74,7376. New Hampshire: $73,9417. Wyoming: $73,3458. Alaska: $72,3749. New Jersey: $72,15010. Virginia: $71,397Millennials are an interesting group to study for a couple of different reasons. They are the most diverse generation in American history, more of them went to college than previous generations, and they are now the largest contingent in the workforce. Many of them also graduated in the middle of the Great Recession, which economists believe might have a lifelong impact on their wages.Determining where Millennials are doing well (and where they are not) indicates broader trends in the American economy. For example, there’s a pocket of purple and dark blue states in the Upper Midwest where these younger adults tend to make above-average wages, as high as $77,090, on an adjusted scale, in Minnesota. The same can be said about the Northeast between Virginia and New Hampshire. These regions contrast with the South, where Texas is the highest state at $62.2K, coming in at number 32 in our list overall. The South clearly stands out as a lackluster region for Millennials in the labor market.Perhaps the biggest surprise on our map is the West Coast, which doesn’t look that different from the South. The one exception is Washington ($70.4K), which is $7,000 higher than California ($62.9K). This highlights the fact that big tech companies are creating great jobs for a select group of skilled workers, but if making the most money is your primary goal, you have a better chance of succeeding if you mo ve to Nebraska instead of California.Want to learn more about where the highest-paying jobs are located? 4 Tips for Handling Workplace Negativity

4 Tips for Handling Workplace Negativity 4 Tips for Handling Workplace Negativity 1Workplace negativity: It can happen in any work environment. Whether you’re in a traditional office or telecommuting, or work a full- or part-time job, or even if you freelance, you’re going to face this obstacle at some point. It might be a person or a group of people who always seem to be negative, who are unsupportive of others, or who actively do negative things to coworkers. And then again, it might be the workplace culture as a whole. Either way, here are a few excellent tips from CEO Sara Sutton for decreasing negativity in the workplace: How to handle workplace negativity: Set the tone and brighten your personal space. with plants, pictures, flowers, or fun office items. If people are surrounded by positive things when they come to see you, they’re more likely to be positive. And you, yourself, are more likely to keep spirits up if you’re surrounded by things that are proven to make people happier and less stressed. You can’t control other people’s negativity, but you can control yours.   Come up with a “zen” approach that helps you “let go” of negativity vibes in the area, such as doing a few yoga stretches, deep breathing for a minute, listening to a favorite song, or drinking a cup of “calming” tea. Start the karma train. Even small kindnesses, such as leaving a bag of treats with a note “Please help yourself” or asking about a coworker’s day can help change the kindness karma in your office. If you’re nice to someone, they’ll hopefully be nicer to the next person they see, who will in turn be nicer to the next person THEY see, etc. Approach your boss, if you can.   Assuming your boss is not the main perpetrator and also considering how good your relationship is with your boss, consider bringing it up with him or her.  Try not to make it a problem that he/she needs to “fix,” but rather ask if they have suggestions for how you can help improve the positivity within your work group. Of course, there are some workplaces where negativity reigns supreme, and if you’ve got the sneaking suspicion that your employer is one of the bad apples, why not find a new workplace altogether? Why cant I find a job It typically comes down to 10 main reasons

'Why can't I find a job' It typically comes down to 10 main reasons 'Why can't I find a job' It typically comes down to 10 main reasons You’ve been job hunting for weeks (or maybe even months) and have yet to even land an interview. Or maybe, you’ve managed to make it to the final stage in a hiring process… but still didn’t end up with the job.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Whatever the situation, job hunting is rarely fun for anyone. And depending on what challenges you’re personally facing while looking for the right next role, you’re also likely going to experience a range of  different emotions during your job search journey  Ã¢€" from overwhelmed, excited, frustrated, impatient and even invisible! But back to the issue. If you’re having trouble landing a job, chances are it’s because of one of these common reasons:1. Your resume and/or experience aren’t relevant enough for the jobIf you don’t have experience that relates directly the position you’re applying for, you’re likely ei ther being screened out before the hiring manager ever even takes a look or you’re being put straight in the “reject” pile since your background lacks the specific things the hiring manager is looking for. For example, you’ll need to have experience using certain platforms and tools to land a job that requires knowledge of those platforms and tools; or, you’ll need to have actually managed a team of people before if the role requires that you have management experience. “Communication skills” and “teamwork” are great to have but don’t really count, as they are way too broad.2. There are errors in your applicationIf your  resume  contains typos, you’ve left required fields blank, or you didn’t share contact information, you’re likely not advancing in the hiring process, no matter how great of a candidate you think you are. That’s because you’ve essentially created a first impression of carelessness and / or inability to follow common sense directions, wh ich is something most companies will pass over in a heartbeat.3. You didn’t follow the application instructionsAnother common pitfall in the job hunt is when candidates take shortcuts during the application process, whether by skipping sections or straight out not following directions throughout. This, like having  errors in your application, demonstrates carelessness and/or inability (or unwillingness!) to follow directions â€" none of which are positive things. Those who follow the instructions are the ones who will be considered for an open position.4. You appear to lack clarity in your career (either job-hopping or resume gaps)If you’ve spent a year or less in more than one of your previous positions or have one or more large but unexplainable  gaps in your resume, employers will be less likely to invest in you because they’ll wonder if you’ll be committed to the role. This is really unfortunate if this applies to your situation, but it’s the reality of the job hunt to day.5. You’re applying for the wrong jobsSimilar to having a resume that isn’t relevant to the job you’re applying to, if you’re in the habit of applying for jobs that you’re grossly under or overqualified for, that could be a likely reason you’re not finding a job. Sure, you might have some of the qualifications required â€" but do you have enough of them? It may be time to take (another) good, hard look at what your resume says you’re capable of.6. Your search is too narrowJust because you want to be a partner in a law firm or a high-level executive at an innovative company doesn’t mean you’re qualified; open your mind to building your career by starting in more junior or even entry-level positions to gain experience and grow your career to meet your goals. You may also need to consider applying outside of your ideal industry or location to build your resume across the skills you need to gain to be competitive.7. Your network isn’t wide enoughIt’s often a job seeker’s least favorite phrase but it’s often true: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” In fact, a LinkedIn study showed that about  85% of all jobs are filled via networking. Whether or not that number is accurate today, the point still stands: getting to know people in various industries through networking opportunities and attending events that put you in the position to meet others who can either connect you with job opportunities might just be the job search tactic that you’ve been missing.8. You didn’t make a great first impressionIf you made it into an interview, but you showed up late or failed to  dress appropriately for the setting  (one level dressier than the job description requires, at minimum), you might not being making a strong enough first impression to stay memorable to the interview team.9. You didn’t practice ahead of timeCandidates who arrive for an interview unprepared stand out  as…unprepared. There are lots of freely available r esources online to help you prepare for an interview, so there’s really no excuse; reading through and preparing answers for the most  common interview questions  for the roles you’re applying for and rehearsing prior to your interview will make a world of difference.10. You don’t know enough about the company or industryEven if you have little knowledge of the company and have never worked in the industry, you can impress an interview team by doing a solid amount of industry and  company research in advance. Take time to learn as much as you can about the organization â€" especially it’s mission, vision,  culture, and accomplishments â€" and the industry. While actively addressing these 10 reasons for not getting a job doesn’t automatically guarantee that you’ll land  the job of your dreams  tomorrow, you’ll be  way  better off than if these things were hindering your job search.Happy job-hunting!This article first appeared on Kununu. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

3D-Printed Cement Improves Crack Resistance

3D-Printed Cement Improves Crack Resistance 3D-Printed Cement Improves Crack Resistance 3D-Printed Cement Improves Crack Resistance Additive manufacturing of cement-based materials, such as concrete and mortar, is a top research objective in the construction industry, with several start-ups having already shown its feasibility. However, concerns exist about the durability and resilience of such printed structures, in part because the inherent weakness that exists along the interfaces created by the layer-by-layer AM methods, where brittle failure can occur. Current efforts to solve this problem are focused on strengthening the interfaces through technical improvements to the 3D-printing process. Researchers at Purdue University, however, have taken a different approach. Inspired by novel structures found in the exoskeletons of arthropods such as lobsters and beetles, the team has successfully 3D-printed hardened cement paste (HCP) that actually controls cracking underload, just like arthropod shells do. For You: Is This the Most Wear-Resistant Material in the World? A micro-CT scan reveals the characteristics of cement paste elements that could make them stronger. . Image: Mohamadreza Moini/Purdue University These naturally occurring structural patterns or architectures, generate unique damage-control mechanisms such as interfacial microcracking and crack twisting. That allows inherently brittle HCP materials to attain flaw tolerant properties and novel performance characteristics, said Mohamadreza Moini, a research team member. These mechanisms lead to damage delocalization in brittle 3D-printed architectured HCP, resulting in quasi-brittle behavior, enhanced fracture and damage tolerance, and unique load displacement response, all without sacrificing strength. The teams goal was to 3D-print elements made from cement-based materials that take advantage of unique structures found in arthropod shells to minimize the damage that can spread between printed layers of a material. The layered structures produced during layer-by-layer printing can result in weak interfaces between those layers, Moini said. In turn, these interfaces provide predefined paths for cracks to follow during the loading of the structure. Depending on the architecture and geometry of these interfaces, the growing crack eventually runs into an interface and initiates the growth of other cracks, thus spreading the distribution of damage and delaying damage localization, which ultimately leads to catastrophic failure of the material. The most promising architectures fabricated with cement-paste materials include honeycomb, compliant, and Bouligand (helicoidal) structures. Using a 3D-printer and cement-paste materials, HCP elements can be printed to include these fundamental structural patterns. Each architecture results in new behaviors in a 3D-printed element. For example, the Bouligand architecture takes advantage of weak interfaces to make a material more crack-resistant; whereas the compliant architecture makes cement-based elements act like a spring, even though they are made of brittle material. Micro-computed tomography examined the microstructure and the architectural patterns of the deposited materials to provide a deeper understanding of weak zones in the structure, such as pore regions found at the interfaces between the printed layers, which promote cracking. Although the team expected that 3D-printing of particular structures would result in performance characteristics that are unattainable in cast counterparts, We did not expect to see the observed level of increase in toughness of brittle, cement-based materials as a result of controlling their architecture, Moini said. For example, Bouligand architectures enhance inelastic deflection of the HCP elements by over 50 percent, when compared to traditionally cast elements from the same materials. Future Possibilities 3D printing can create architectures that allow brittle cement-based materials to achieve flaw-tolerant properties at larger structural scales or to bend without breaking. In the future, such architectures may be incorporated in structures undergoing vibrations to generate energy when coupled with a piezoelectric device. Helicoidal architectures can be incorporated in the design of structural elements, such as beams and columns of the building or concrete pavements and provide additional toughness and increased longevity. The team plans to explore other types of materials-processing techniques and architectures that may improve performance of cement-based materials at larger scale. Understanding materials properties in a fresh state in order to suitably control the shape-holding capacity of the printing materials is also something we will focus on in future, Moini said. Another area of future research is the combination of cementitious materials with other materials to improve mechanical properties and add functionality. Self-healing and thermal adaptation will be some of the future topics given current technology and research in the general area of multifunctional materials. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For You: 4D Printing Advances Additive Manufacturing Unique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable Drones The Upswing of Innovation 3D printing can create architectures that allow brittle cement-based materials to achieve flaw-tolerant properties at larger structural scales, or to bend without breaking. Underemployment Study Finds Most Workers Feel Underpaid, Gender Gap Prevalent

Underemployment Study Finds Most Workers Feel Underpaid, Gender Gap Prevalent Underemployment Study Finds Most Workers Feel Underpaid, Gender Gap Prevalent “Underemployment is a real concern for todays job seekers as the economic recovery continues to be sluggish,” Katie Bardaro, lead economist at PayScale, said. “Hiring in many industries remains below expectations and unless you are in certain high-demand fields like technology or health care, well-paying job opportunities are simply not plentiful.” Some highlights from PayScales Underemployment study include: Being underpaid is the most common reason (80 percent) that workers say they are underemployed. 48 percent of female workers say they are underemployed, compared to 39 percent of male workers. Generation Y, defined as workers born between 1982 and 2002, is experiencing the most underemployed workers (45 percent). However, they are the least likely (77 percent) to say they are underpaid. 12 out of 15 of the most underemployed majors have more female than male graduates. Liberal Arts, Psychology, and English Language and Literature are the three majors with the highest percentage of workers who claim to be underemployed because they are not using their education/training. These majors all have more than 70 percent female graduates. “PayScale has found that more than 40 percent of our surveyed users feel they are underemployed, and the overwhelming majority of them (80 percent) feel it is due to their pay not matching their level of education or training. Underemployment is clearly a broader issue than the strict definition by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which defines it as settling for part-time work when seeking full-time work,” continued Bardaro.
